For as long as I can remember, I have been interested in natural health. As a child, I loved going to the local health food store to look at all those herbs, bottles and strange foods. I frequently read books and magazines on nutritional health as I got older. I’m pretty sure I was the only teenager in my town who was geeking out on herbs.
In college, I started taking care of my own simple health issues with natural alternatives to pharmaceuticals. It wasn’t until I was 23 that I realized just how powerful herbs could be. That year I was hospitalized with an illness. After weeks of tests, I was diagnosed with a rare and terminal autoimmune disease. Western medicine didn’t have any solutions for me so I turned to natural therapies including herbs, acupuncture and nature therapy. Within six months I was symptom free. After that experience, I knew I wanted to spend my life helping others as an herbalist.
It’s been my honor to have had wise elders guiding me along the way. I have learned a lot about herbs (and life) from Karen Sherwood, Michael Tierra, Paul Bergner, K.P. Khalsa, jim mcdonald, and so many others. It’s amazing to have so many wise elders and so much herbal information at our fingertips!
I am very proud to have been a part of LearningHerbs since 2005, when I wrote my first herbal article for John. As soon as HerbMentor opened I was excited to be a part of that community.
I am thrilled to be the Education Director for LearningHerbs. I get to write the Remedies and Recipe articles, create original lessons, moderate the forums, and curate the educational content on HerbMentor. I also created the Taste of Herbs curriculum and course for LearningHerbs.
Besides my work with LearningHerbs, I teach internationally at conferences and private retreats. I also have a popular mentorship program to help herbal students grow their herbal knowledge. I am a professional member of the American Herbalist Guild and a practicing clinical herbalist who is passionate about helping people find natural solutions for chronic disease.
I wouldn’t be the herbalist I am today without the guidance of John Gallagher and the community at HerbMentor. It’s been a privilege to be a part of it all!

John awakened my interest in plants and their healing power when we began our relationship 18 years ago. I had been teaching at Puget Sound Community School, a private school for middle and high school students which encouraged the kids to follow their hearts and pursue their passions. I was focusing on a career in education. John stole my heart and began teaching me about plants on one of our early dates, offering me dandelion leaves for an upset stomach.
Our relationship evolved along with our knowledge about plants. As John took classes, he shared what he was learning with me. Together we identified and harvested wild edibles, tried out the nourishing power of infusions, learned to make tinctures and poultices and to cultivate our plant allies in gardens of our own.
Once the kids came along, we relied on the plants to help nourish and heal our children through all sorts of childhood issues. We had fun integrating plants into our diet, and were continually amazed by how effective plant medicine can be. Also, we found we felt good harvesting and processing plant material. There was a “rightness” in our bodies when we engaged in those activities. Eventually, I did an herbal training program on my own, studying with Sally King at RavenCroft garden for three years. I completed her program called Healing from the Ground Up, gaining a foundation in botany and herbal medicine making while also extensively researching truly healthy family diets.
LearningHerbs has allowed me to bring my passions together in a beautiful way. I have been integrating my background in education; my love for writing and storytelling; my passion for positive cultural transformation, peaceful conflict resolution, and sustainable living; and my deep connection with the natural world, to share our passion and knowledge about plants and their healing qualities with all of you. This combination has led to the development of the Wildcraft! board game and the Herb Fairies learning program.
I hope what we share empowers you and nourishes your lives as much as it has us and ours!
